Description : This unique vocal instrument is based on a simple concept with a very strong pedigree: chromatically sampled vocal sustain captured over 150 years ago. This original recording method is called phonoautography, invented in early 1850 by the French inventor Edouard Leon Scott. The device consisted of an acoustic cone and a vibrating membrane connected to a needle. The needle was in contact with the surface of a manually rotated glass cylinder covered with soot or paper. Sound vibrations, passing through the cone, made the membrane vibrate, transmitting vibrations to the needle, which drew marks on the soot. The device allowed the display of sound vibrations, but did not offer a way to reproduce them. These original archival recordings were preserved by the French Academy of Sciences, and finally transcribed by First Sounds using laser scanning at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The library includes early voice recordings processed, edited and turned into unique, atmospheric soundscapes, sound textures, tonal pads, synths, atmospheres, drones and synth drums.
